(Step-2: Show certified knowledge of the Swedish language)
There are few ways to reach level Svenska B, these ways are listed by socialstyrelsen on the website.
The commonest is to start with SFI (Swedish for Immigrants) at Komvux. You have to start at level C and be clear with level D. For me, this took 3 months. Then I had two options:
Either to do SAS (Swedish as a second language) and then swedish A and B at komvux.
OR, to do swedish A and B + medical swedish at Folk universitet within 6 months.
I chose the second option and that's what's commonest for doctors to do.

Hey Nosheen, Thank you for posting these valuable informations , which no one can find anywhere else no matter how many websites you surf or look for answers,
ReplyDeleteI have one question , actually two
1- after SFI you have to do SAS and then the two options comes (Komvux or Folk) or you do SFI and then the option of Folk and Komvux (SAS included ) comes , I mean you have to do SAS anyway like SFI or not ?
2- Was SFA medicin which is taught in Södertäljie available to you at the time you started studying Swedish or not ? if you have any information about that course or heard of it from colleagues please do tell. as I see you didn't take that route
As for university studies for Swedish , I contacted several universities and it all takes a lot more time than these routes you mentioned I think
Best regards
Hi, thanks for compliments & encouragement!
Delete1. Sfi, SAS etc are the levels of swedish. Komvux and folk or lernia etc are institutes that offer these courses. All depends on the city you're in. I switched to folkuniversitet because it was offering a medical swedish course of 40 weeks. I skipped sas because i was recommended by teachers and took svA & svB exam directly (they have now been replaced with levels sv. 1 2 3)
2. No idea about this course u mention. I dont like how universities wabt u to be there 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Just for language?. But of course if that course is the basis for ur visa or u don't have other options, then I can understand.
Hope it helps!
Good luck!
P.s. Sjukvårdssvenska at folkuni was 40 weeks long, full time, but we had classes 3 or 4 hours x 3 times a week, rest was the assignments and homeworks. 1 of 3 days was basic medical terminology etc., other 2 days were swedish in general.
DeleteThank you very much for the response, I hope you are doing great with your Work and family , So I will do SFI first and then look at my options with Folk maybe. but as far as you know for the Sjukvårdssvenska , do you think 40 weeks was long ? maybe this was a medium intensive course and not the full intensive course , one last question who booked you for the course at folk ? arbest or Kommun ?
ReplyDeleteFrom what I'm hearing, the courses are almost that intensity, it's the people who show the will to take exams quickly and clear them. I have studied with doctors who cleared swedish requirements in 3 and 5 months (for me it was 1 year including 9 months study and then wait for exam) and they were happy to have done it fast since you learn everyday swedish from practice anyway. But they did seem to wish they had the confidence with grammatical rules and writing skills.
ReplyDeleteOur course was started at that time by both arbets and komvux mutual co-op, different people who knew medical personnel in need of such a course came together and made it possible. So we got lucky basically.
wow 3- 5 months, that is impressive but even if I for example finish it near that time , I still have to wait for next year for the KUL application to open , because I think correct me if I am wrong its better to do KUL than TULE for newly graduates from med school , since you are still fresh and need integration into this new system.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your help and Lycka till :)
