It's been a really long time since I posted here. I have been really busy, both with work and in personal life. Work has gone good. It was a rich experience working at a clinic as a doctor. For the most part, I was treated like any other doctor in terms of what patients I get. But I did feel like it would be great to have license after AT/internship/housejob. I got to learn a lot more about the system and practical things. I even have a few patients who really want to just have me as their GP/husläkare. I wish it was easier to begin with AT and go faster to specialization because it's no fun to know so little. Plus temporary underläkare don't get any time from work hours to study (instuderingstid). Anyway, there have been tough periods, but mostly a good experience for a first job. So now it's just to continue applying for AT untill I get it. And to remember to not give up on my dreams despite how long it takes.
Even though medicine is a big part of our lives as doctors, life & family are just as important and they have to function properly for our sanity and to be able to excel professionally.
From 1st July 2016 have there been changes in rules for foreign doctors. Biggest changes will be felt by specialists in my opinion. Here's the link to the new license procedure.

Hello dr nosheen
ReplyDeleteI want to ask something about psychiatry residency. I believe after getting the medical license in Sweden you need to apply for jobs at the hospitals (läkaretidningen publish these job ads I guess ) and get interviews
But what is the reality ? Is it so much challenging specialty? During the interviews what they are looking for? Is it my language skill or my point at tule exam or are they looking for any publication or research experience about psychiatry?
I know it is a very specific question but I need to hear it from someone who has been in that road and it is only you :)
Hi, jobs are advertised on platsbanken at arbetsförmedlingen.se as well.
DeleteI have no idea about any specific specialty, but after you have completed AT and get a license, you can apply for work at places you are interested in, so that they get to know you. Then that time can even count as part of ST.
Which specialties are more popular & competitive varies from time to time, just like any other country.
Hope it was of some help.
Good luck!
Hej Dr nosheen been reading all your blogs I am about to take the new kunskaps prov beginning next Jan. I wonder how the competition is for a placent in a kirurg ST.
ReplyDeleteHi, Since I'm no where near an ST right now, I can't answer that. But I'm sure you can get in almost anywhere if you try working there at first as legitimerad läkare.
DeleteAfter kunskapsprov, you have to do AT, then you can apply for ST.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply Nosheen!
DeleteHope to read about when you enter your ST best of luck to you.

Hey Dawood.
ReplyDeleteSure contact me I would be more than happy.
hi i have been reading your blog over n over but one thing im still not clear about it what do i do after getting the medical licence? for some other countries, there will be one department where you apply for internship/resident job and they will place you in the hospitals. but from what im understanding, in sweden, i would need to find and send as many cv as i can to various position to a variety of different hospital. is that true? if it is so, how do i know which position to apply for? as i am a new grad, i would very much prefer a trainee position.
ReplyDeleteAfter completing degree you can apply for job as junior doctor yourself. You even have to apply for AT yourself, there is no centralized system unfortunately. You will know about the job ads online and from läkartidningen, don't worry.
Delete'License' you'll get after AT. Then you can apply for specialist training wherever you want.
Are you sure there is AT after kunskaprov exam ?
