KUL interview

I have been asked multiple times about the interview for getting into komplerande utbildning för utländska läkare, so I have decided to post whatever I remember at one place.
I have studied this course at Sahlgrenska institute, Gothenburg university. The applications are accepted from March to mid-April. I applied in 2014 and recieved the call for interview within a week or two. The interview was at the end of May and the final selection was informed in mid-June. As far as I remember, the interview wasn't a big deal. I read the 'fall' or case the night before and googled a little about it. Good sources to read would be www.internetmedicin.se , läkemedelsboken (found online) , lisa labbes kompendier (google it) and even course books (for enthusiasts hehehe).

I had my interview at 11a.m. an  there were two people present. The course administrator and the incharge of medicine for the course. First they asked me to tell something about myself, I started carefully, not too much details unless they asked for it. My interview wasn't so formal or tense I felt, they even asked me how old my baby was etc. (And told me about the possibility to reserve my place till next year after I get selected since the baby is younger than one year).

Then the teacher asked me if I had read the case they sent me. We discussed it systematically. I was not super smart but tried to answer the key things.

Many people have asked me what are the meriting factors for selection. I've always replied that I haven't been able to find any common factor among my course mates at this degree. We are 16 students, some have taken TULE multiple times and some have never taken it, some speak with native Swedish accent and some have a hard time with it, some were born or raised in Sweden and some have been here 2 or 3 years, some are single and some have two or three kids, some were not asked a lot about the case during interview, some had undergone another sort of degree i  Sweden.... in short, I haven't been able to find any deciding or meriting factor.

As of this year 70 applied to Gothenburg university, 35 got interview call and 16 will be selected. The applying number is larger in Stockholm.

My suggestion for the interview is to keep calm, be yourself, show genuine interest in medicine and the course, answer the case in a clinical manner keeping in mind the circumstances ( at akuten, vårdcentral etc.).

Being a foreigner in Sweden?

One of my teachers said that the struggle of having competition among working people and complaints regarding reduction of available jobs due to immigration is basically a problem of the low educated population. When I gave it a thought, it appeared to be plausible. Studying and working in Sweden, I have never come across any situation where I've been discriminated for being a foreigner or a Muslim. Either I have been very lucky till now or it really is the case that my teacher was talking about. Working, new rules

It's been a really long time since I posted here. I have been really busy, both with work and in personal life. Work has gone good. It was a rich experience working at a clinic as a doctor. For the most part, I was treated like any other doctor in terms of what patients I get. But I did feel like it would be great to have license after AT/internship/housejob. I got to learn a lot more about the system and practical things. I even have a few patients who really want to just have me as their GP/husläkare. I wish it was easier to begin with AT and go faster to specialization because it's no fun to know so little. Plus temporary underläkare don't get any time from work hours to study (instuderingstid). Anyway, there have been tough periods, but mostly a good experience for a first job. So now it's just to continue applying for AT untill I get it. And to remember to not give up on my dreams despite how long it takes. Even though medicine is a big part of our lives as doctor...

Kompletterande utbildning för läkare med utländsk examen (KUL) - Gothenburg

I applied for this course in April, got the interview call for May, and received the news in mid June that  I have been given one of the 16 places at Gothenburg university. Classes started on August 25th. It's going great for the most part. The teachers are really helpful. The most helpful part till now was the history taking and examination practice that we had in the first few weeks. Here we can have an advantage over those jumping directly into the system. The funniest thing is, this one year course seemed SO long before, but now it seems like it's too little time to read each of the subjects we have. I'm forced to think how could I imagine preparing for TULE within 4-5 months. The best thing I've heard from a teacher till now is that we are going to be tested at the same level as other medical students in Sweden. It's been a month here and mostly theory classes. The next month is going to be at vårdcentral, akut, medicine and geriatrik. Let's see h...
