Step 3a. Pass a medical knowledge test

Feb-2012 Now this is the part that gives butterflies in the stomach, and sends chills through the spine. Infact, this is the part I have been trying to know most about. The information about the test from socialstyrelsen defines the pattern, format, and composition of the test. It even clarifies how marks are distributed while conducting the clinical tests. It also includes a list of recommended litterature, in Swedish of course. And there lies the problem. Anyway, now that I am getting certain day by day that there is no other choice, I will have to read those books in Swedish only; I've started looking for the books. I found most of them at the university library and the city library but I would like to have my own ones which I can use and mark without a fear. That's just the way I study. I'm looking for used books on the internet, have even given an advertisement at www.blocket.se about the books I need. Hope to get my hands on my books soon. Aug-2012 The next te...

Learning Swedish language - Sjukvårdssvenska and Swedish A

I came to know about Folkuniversitet during one of the "medspråkare" (or whatever it's called) sessions at komvux. This small lady told me I could be done with Swedish in 6 months and that I'm wasting time over here. She was not really that nice while she spoke, pretty rude and straightforward. I was shocked to my wits. The mere possibility of me having wasted 2 months was shocking. I went to Anne Lie, who handles SFI at komvux here. She said that the course is arranged by arbetsformedlingen when they have at least 5 persons willing to take part in it. They did have such a course in 2010 but not in 2011 because of not having enough number of people. Relief. At least there wasn't a course of doctors going on out there without me. Second, one should have done level C of SFI before starting there. That's precisely where I was. So I hadn't wasted any time really, but every day after SFI would be a waste. So I kept going back to ar...

Learning Swedish language - SFI

Before moving to Sweden, I was told that I will have to learn Swedish language in any case before I can even think about practicing medicine here. That's obvious, since I've seen foreign medical students who come to Pakistan and must know some Urdu to be able to communicate with the patients and to survive in that environment. In Sweden, the basic thing is the same but the whole process is different. I mean, there were no institutes in Pakistan that taught Urdu (the national language) or English to the foreigners, or Sindhi (the provincial language) to us. Whatever English we know is from teachers who themselves do not have the American or British accent, who sometimes are not even marginally competent to teach English language. Here, it's easy to just get yourself registered and there you find teachers who have a good knowledge of Swedish grammar, whose accents are original Swedish ones. Most of them have years of experience in the field of teaching languages. They start ...
